Design Update 2.8 – Motion Platform

Hi everyone! This week we are happy to announce that the HFS Spitfire MkIX Builders Guide Rev2-8.pdf has been published.

This incorporates the following changes:

  • 1. Provided designs for the Motion Platform option:
    • a. Added GA Drawing HFD-100141.
    • b. Added Assembly Drawing HFD-100142.
    • c. Updated Drawing Register Rev8.
    • d. Updated Bill of Materials (BOM): Spitfire Mk9 BOM v443.
    • e. Added five off 24mm Plywood cutting patterns to the Plywood/Cutting Patterns folder.
  • 2. Updated the Builders Guide:
    • Added Section 4.10.6 Motion Platform.
    • Added note to Section 4.2.10 about drilling holes in Frames 8 and 11 prior to Fuselage Frame Assembly.
    • Updated Section 5.3.2 to provide guidance on Motion Platform Setup.

The addition of motion simulation has introduced a whole new level of immersion. In my mind there have been three groundbreaking changes to the flight simulation world. The first was VR, (which led me to design and build and share the HFS Spitfire Mk.IX cockpit), next was visual passthrough to enable you to see yourself in the cockpit and the virtual world outside the canopy. Adding motion to the mix is as big a step up in immersion as VR was.

It has resulted in a feeling of real cause and effect while flying. No longer is a mistake made just a mistake, but there is a physical impact, making the pilot hyperaware of his actions. I talk a bit more about this in my video:
